Paediatric care for congenital heart conditions, childhood cancer, transplant, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and other complex conditions.

Children need treatment designed around their age, size, development and specific condition. The hospital environment, nursing care, medicines and long-term follow-up all need to be appropriate for children.

Who May Need Treatment?

  • Children with congenital heart conditions.
  • Children with thalassaemia, sickle cell disease or childhood cancer.
  • Children requiring neurosurgery or orthopaedic surgery.
  • Children who may need cochlear implantation or cleft lip and palate treatment.
  • Children requiring paediatric liver or kidney transplant or other specialist care.

Treatment Options

  • Congenital Heart Disease

Treatment ranges from device closure of heart defects to repair of tetralogy of Fallot, arterial switch surgery, repair of septal defects and staged single-ventricle procedures.

  • Thalassaemia & Sickle Cell Disease

Bone marrow or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be potentially curative for selected children.

  • Childhood Cancer

Treatment may include intensive phases in India followed by maintenance treatment at home, when arranged with the child's local specialist.

  • Paediatric Neurosurgery

Care includes surgery for hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, spina bifida, epilepsy and brain tumours.

  • Paediatric Orthopaedics

Treatment includes clubfoot care, hip dysplasia, limb deformity correction, limb lengthening and selected cerebral palsy procedures.

  • Other Specialist Care

Cochlear implantation, cleft lip and palate care, paediatric transplant, neonatal intensive care and specialist paediatric medical care are available.

Why India?

Established Indian centres run dedicated paediatric units with paediatric intensive care, paediatric anaesthesia, paediatric-trained nursing and child-specific medication protocols. Experience with complex childhood conditions is particularly important when choosing a centre.

Recovery and What to Expect

  • Congenital heart repair may require around 7 to 14 days in hospital, including intensive care.
  • Bone marrow transplant may require 4 to 6 weeks in protected isolation.
  • Cochlear implantation may require around 2 to 3 days in hospital.
  • Cleft repair may require around 2 to 3 days. Total time in India can range from several weeks to several months depending on the treatment.
  • Many childhood conditions require long-term follow-up and sometimes staged treatment. A local paediatrician or specialist should be identified before returning home.

Top Paediatric Hospitals

Look for a dedicated paediatric unit, paediatric intensive care, paediatric anaesthesia, child-specific nursing and medication protocols, procedure-specific paediatric volumes and a clear long-term follow-up plan. Facilities such as parent accommodation, play areas and schooling support are important for longer stays.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can both parents travel with the child?

Usually yes. India's medical visa allows attendants alongside the patient, commonly two. Rules vary by nationality, so we confirm yours before booking. For anything longer than a short stay, having both parents makes a real difference.

  • Will my child need to return to India?

Sometimes. Staged heart repairs, some orthopaedic work and post transplant care need review visits. Many other cases do not, and follow up runs by video with your local paediatrician. Ask upfront whether this is one treatment or a staged plan.

  • Who will care for my child after returning home?

Sort this out before discharge. You should leave with a full summary, a medication list, a follow up schedule and a written list of warning signs. Name a local paediatrician in advance. The India team stays reachable by video.

  • Can a sibling be tested as a bone marrow donor?

Yes, siblings are tested first. Each full sibling has roughly a one in four chance of matching. Testing is a blood sample or a cheek swab. If nobody matches, a half matched parent or a donor registry may still work.

  • How are pain and anxiety managed in children?

Deliberately, and differently from adults. Numbing cream before needles, play therapy, distraction, and a parent in the room. Pain is scored with tools built for children and treated early rather than on request. Ask whether the hospital has play therapists.
