Joint replacement and orthopaedic care for knee, hip and related mobility problems.

Joint replacement is considered when pain and loss of function from joint disease continue to affect daily life despite non-surgical treatment. The choice of implant, surgical approach and rehabilitation plan all matter.

Who May Need Treatment?

  • Patients with advanced knee or hip arthritis causing persistent pain and limited movement.
  • Patients whose symptoms continue despite physiotherapy, weight management, medication or injections.
  • Patients with joint damage requiring revision surgery.
  • Patients with selected sports or ligament injuries who need reconstructive surgery.

Treatment Options

  • Knee Replacement

Total knee replacement is available in different designs. Partial knee replacement may suit selected patients whose arthritis affects only one part of the knee.

  • Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement can be performed through posterior, lateral or direct anterior approaches using modern bearing surfaces.

  • Robotic & computer-navigated surgery

These technologies can improve precision in component positioning. They do not guarantee a better outcome for every patient.

  • Revision surgery

Revision procedures can address loosening, infection or fracture around an existing implant and should be performed at experienced centres.

  • Sports & orthopaedic surgery

ACL and PCL reconstruction, meniscal repair, rotator cuff repair, cartilage procedures, shoulder and elbow replacement and deformity correction are also available.

Why India?

Indian orthopaedic centres offer high-volume joint replacement programmes, access to modern implants and structured physiotherapy. Planned procedures can also often be scheduled without long waiting periods.

Recovery and What to Expect

  • Knee replacement usually requires around 3 to 5 days in hospital.
  • Hip replacement usually requires around 3 to 5 days.
  • Single joint replacement may require about 3 to 4 weeks in India.
  • Both knees may require around 4 to 5 weeks, while complex revision surgery can require longer.
  • Walking and physiotherapy usually begin early after surgery.
  • Long flights soon after leg surgery can increase the risk of blood clots. Your surgeon should decide when you are fit to fly.

Top Hospitals for Joint Replacement

Look for high annual joint replacement and revision volumes, infection monitoring, in-house physiotherapy, a clear blood-clot prevention protocol and a named implant brand. Hospital accreditation should be independently verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can both knees be replaced on the same trip?

Yes. Either both under one anaesthetic, or a few days apart in the same stay. Doing both together means one recovery but more strain on the body. Your anaesthetic assessment decides which suits you.

  • How much physiotherapy will I need at home?

More than most people expect. A knee replacement needs six to twelve weeks of structured work plus daily exercises at home. Line up your local physiotherapist before you travel so there is no gap.

  • Can I play sports after joint replacement?

Walking, swimming, cycling, golf and hiking are usually fine and good for you. Running, jumping and contact sports wear the implant faster and are discouraged. Ask about the sports you actually play.

  • What happens if an implant fails later?

Most last fifteen to twenty years or more. If one loosens or wears out, revision surgery replaces the parts. Revision is a bigger operation and less predictable. Keep your implant card, any future surgeon will need it.
